How Long Does It Take to Recover from a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a permanent solution to help you replace a missing tooth. Here is a guide to the recovery process from receiving a dental implant.

Dental Implant Recovery

While recovery times vary from patient to patient, many dental implant patients recover quickly and can return to work either the same day or the day after. However, it is recommended that recovering dental implant patients adhere to a soft-food diet in the days and weeks following a dental implant procedure to ensure proper healing.

Post-Dental Implant Medication

Since dental implants are a minor procedure, there isn’t much medication involved. At most, doctors will recommend patients take an over-the-counter medicine such as ibuprofen to reduce swelling and increase comfort. If there are sutures involved, they are removed 10-14 days after the procedure and generally do not require any additional medication.

Osseointegration

The other main aspect of recovery time is osseointegration, which is how long it takes living bones to adjust and connect with an implant. While dental implants are placed where teeth were once located, it takes time for your body to fuse with it. Osseointegration is a natural process within your body, so there is very little that can be done to change the amount of time the process requires. Typically, it can take anywhere from two to four months.

Securing the Crown

Once the area around the dental implant has healed and osseointegration is complete, your dentist will then attach a permanent crown to the dental implant.

While immediate pain subsides and normal life resumes after about two weeks, it can take longer for the actual process to be complete. Overall, dental implant recovery can take as little as a few months or as long as six months.
