How Long Do Veneers Last For?
To improve the look of your smile and protect your teeth from damage, your dentist may recommend placing a thin layer of material over your tooth known as a veneer. There are two types of veneers, composite and porcelain and each offer different degrees of durability and longevity.
Here is what you can expect from each type of veneer to help you decide which is right for you.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are made of thin “shells” of porcelain that are bonded to the front of the tooth. They are more durable, resist stains better than composite veneers, and provide an extremely natural aesthetic. Porcelain veneers can last from 10 to 12 years. Their only downside is that porcelain veneers must be fully replaced when damaged as they cannot be repaired.
Composite Veneers
Composite veneers are the cheaper option of the two veneers; however, they typically only last 4 to 8 years, so they require replacement sooner than porcelain veneers. Made from a synthetic mix of resin and glass, composite veneers are applied to the tooth one layer at a time and require less enamel to be removed from the natural tooth. While composite veneers are less durable than porcelain veneers, chips and cracks in composite veneers can be repaired. stains show up more easily, and appear bulkier and not as natural.
Ultimately, the longevity of your composite or porcelain veneers will depend on your overall dental health and how well you take care of your veneers.
