Signs You May Have a Cavity
As one of the most common dental issues for people in the US, cavities happen to the best of us, even if you’re careful about regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. But how can you be sure? Here are six signs you may have a cavity:
The Pain
Pain is one of the most common cavity symptoms, and often happens when the affected tooth contacts food. If a tooth hurts while you’re eating, chances are very good you have a cavity. If your tooth hurts even when nothing is touching it, you may have an infection present or there may be more damage than a simple cavity.
Temperature Sensitivity
Teeth that have been compromised due to a cavity are often very sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks (and even to the water you use to brush your teeth). If one of your teeth suddenly becomes sensitive to hot or cold, a cavity is the most likely culprit. Let Dr. Orobitg or your hygienist know, as there are other reasons temperature sensitivity can occur.
Affected by Sugar
A tooth with a cavity will often become sensitive to sugar. A tingling or mild to moderate pain sensation when eating sugary food is a good indicator of a cavity.
Dark Spots
Though there are different types of cavities, some can cause your teeth to develop small holes that are visible to the naked eye. When there’s damage like this, the tooth can sometimes become brittle and chip or break more easily.
Bad Breath
Though not as strong of an indicator as others on its own, bad breath can be a result of food particles lodging themselves in the small holes created by a cavity.
